MCAT Question A Day - 9/16/13 - Answer!
If the speed of a transverse wave of a violin string is 12 meters per second and the frequency played is 4.0 Hz, what is the wavelength of the sound?
A. 48 m
B. 12 m
C. 3.0 m
D. 0.33 m
The correct answer is (C). The speed is equal to the product of the velocity and wavelength; therefore:
wavelength = (velocity)/(frequency) = (12 m/s) / 4s-1 = 3 meters
