MCAT Question A Day - 5/22/13 - Answer!
Which statement is true about ovulation?
A. One secondary oocyte leaves the ovarian follicle, while one secondary oocyte remains behind.
B. One secondary oocyte and one polar body leave the ovarian follicle.
C. Two secondary oocytes leave the ovarian follicle.
D. One ovum leaves the ovarian follicle, while three polar bodies remain behind.
The correct answer is (B). It is the major product of the first meiotic division, the secondary oocyte that is ovulated, along with a still-attached polar body. The second meiotic division will take place only if the secondary oocyte is fertilized by a sperm cell (usually in the fallopian tubes).
