Practice MCAT Question - Q117 - Answer!

The products of hemoglobin breakdown include the pigments biliverdin and bilirubin. Where are these molecules most likely produced?

A.  Kidneys
B.  Spleen and liver
C.  Arteries and veins
D.  Arteries, veins, and capillaries

The correct answer is (B). The spleen and liver are primarily responsible for the breakdown of worn-out RBCs and the metabolism of the heme portion of hemoglobin. Biliverdin and bilirubin are eventually sent by the liver (via the hepatic duct) to the small intestine as part of bile. From there, these pigments leave the body as part of feces.
